Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Virendra Sachdeva on Thursday said his party will soon announce candidates for all 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards going for bypolls on November 30.

Mr. Sachdeva said meetings are under way to select the best candidates.

Of the 12 wards, nine were held by the BJP. The remaining three were held by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress and AAP have also begun preparations for bypolls.

The byelections were necessitated as the councillors vacated the seats following their election to higher office.

The bypolls will be held for the wards of Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka-B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash, and Vinod Nagar.

The Delhi Congress is holding meetings to discuss the bypoll strategy. The Delhi unit’s chief, Devender Yadav, said the party is looking to highlight that the Rekha Gupta-led BJP government has “failed on all fronts”. “People now seek change, as the overwhelming opinion is that there is a strong anti-BJP feeling among the people. Congress has a bright chance of winning the byelections with huge margins,” he said.

Mr. Yadav said that the Congress will aggressively highlight issues affecting the wards, including power and water crises, sanitation issues, pollution, broken roads, house demolitions, and the non-fulfillment of election promises, such as a ₹2500 honorarium for every woman.

As per the election schedule, nominations will begin on November 3, with the last date for filing papers on November 10. Voting will be held on November 30, with counting on December 3.
