Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy and District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar headed the gram sabha meeting conducted at Aalthur panchayat here on the occasion of Local Governance Day.
Addressing the public, Mr. Moorthy, said that through the ‘Ungaludan Stalin’ scheme, petitions were directly received from the public in the area.
“Those petitions we have received are being processed,” he added.
“All development works in this area, including street lights and road facilities, are being undertaken even before the public raise requests. Over 95% of the development works in this panchayat have been completed, and the remaining works will be carried out quickly within the next two months,” he added.
Accepting the public’s demand for new bus services to their area, Mr. Moorthy announced that new bus services would be operated in the mornings and evenings starting from Monday to help the school-going children and working men and women.
Mr. Praveen Kumar, speaking there, said: “The Tamil Nadu government, with the aim of having a special day for local bodies, declared November 1 as Local Governance Day in 2007 and has been giving importance to village panchayats. It was the dream of our Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, that administration should run from rural areas.”
With the objective of running self-governance in the village, the system was divided into three administrations—district panchayats, panchayat unions, and village panchayats—from 1993, and development works are being implemented in the villages based on this, he added.
