Members of Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) who started their indefinite sit-in strike here at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) campus on Thursday continued their protest on the second day on Friday.
As about 100 lecturers started their protest and about 15 women lecturers and 45 male lecturers continued their protest throughout the night at the university campus itself, due to the inaction by the university administration, C. Muniyandi, general secretary, MUFA, said, they decided to continue with their protest.
Their complaint was that many lecturers were yet to receive their promotion orders despite their eligibility and participation in the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) process held in February and March 2024, he added.
Though they have other ways of grievance redressal mechanisms, they have tried it all and only after facing failures from those attempts, have they resorted to staging a protest, he lamented.
The previous protests the lecturers staged did not seem to have affected the administration and the ruling government, he added.
“As we too have families to take care of, we cannot just ignore what is due to us. While promotions are our basic rights we cannot let it all go due to the ignorance of the government,” Mr. Muniyandi stated.
As the administration had not invited them for any productive talks, he said, they had decided to carry forward their agitation.
In the evening, following talks with the university registrar and with the representatives of the Police Department, the university administration assured them that their demands would be fulfilled. After this the lecturers called off their strike, said the organisers.
