Members of Madurai Kamaraj University Faculty Association (MUFA) staged a sit-in protest on the premises of Madurai Kamaraj University here on Thursday urging the State government to immediately process promotions for eligible lecturers in the university.

C. Muniyandi, general secretary, MUFA, said, about 100 lecturers, 85 assistant professors and 15 associate professors were yet to receive their promotion orders despite their eligibility and participation in the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) process held in February and March 2024.

“Though we have submitted petitions to the Minister of Higher Education Govi Chezhiaan, Secretary of Higher Education Department, and Convenor, demanding our promotions, no fruitful actions have been taken towards our demand,” he added.

“He added that not only was the university’s delay in approving promotions for a large number of faculty members a violation of their rights, but it would also eventually impact student education as the teachers became dejected.”

Mr. Muniyandi noted that if the promotions had been issued on time, the associate professors would now be professors and eligible to receive significant funding for their departments. He alleged that due to this delay, two associate professors even retired before receiving their deserved promotions.

“We are done protesting again and again. To bring an end to this prolonging problem and to pressurise the government to issue the promotion orders we have planned to continue our strike as an indefinite protest,” he added.

About 15 women lecturers and 45 male lecturers were to continue their protest on the college premises, he informed.
