The frequent damage to the road under bridge (RUB) at Kollampalayam on the VellakovilāSankari National Highway 381A is causing considerable hardship for motorists, who complain that their vehicles are often damaged.
The underpass, a key access point for vehicles entering the city, was earlier maintained by the State Highways Department and was declared a national highway as per Gazette No. 2282 dated May 27, 2024. The core issue, motorists say, is the poor drainage system, as waterlogging remains a perennial problem. The 10.5-metre-wide, 5.5-metre-high structure sees frequent water stagnation due to seepage. Though a drainage system was designed to prevent stagnation and railings were installed on both sides of the road, the problems persist.
Heavy vehicles, particularly loaded lorries, frequently damage the concrete portions of the railings. āIn the past six months, this is the third time the structure has been damaged,ā said a motorist, adding that tyres get damaged as well and blamed authorities for failing to install warning boards. Another motorist said the concrete portions are completely damaged, making it difficult even for heavy vehicles to use the road. āApart from water stagnation, a pit has formed, causing hardship to motorists,ā said a two-wheeler rider from Nadarmedu.
With the monsoon intensifying, motorists have urged Railway authorities to carry out repair works on a war footing and ensure quality so that the structure is not repeatedly damaged.
