With the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS) scheduling a counselling session to absorb staff nurses working on contract basis to regular timescale, the Tamil Nadu Nurses Empowerment Association said it was disappointing that only 167 nurses were called to attend the counselling when 8,000 nurses were waiting to be regularised.

According to a circular issued by the DMS, online counselling for absorption of contract-based staff nurses into the regular time scale against available vacancies was proposed to be conducted on December 15.

A total of 167 nurses, who were recruited through the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) and are working on contractual basis, were called to attend the counselling.

Following this, the association said about 8,000 nurses who were recruited through the MRB to work in Tamil Nadu government hospitals were hoping that the DMK government would fulfil its election promise of regularising contract staff into permanent positions.

However, with elections approaching, the announcement of a counselling session to regularise the services of only 167 nurses is disappointing, N. Subin, general secretary of the association, said in a statement. “Through this, the DMK government has betrayed the trust of the nurses. It should reconsider its decision and regularise the services of all MRB nurses who were selected through examinations before the elections,” he said in the statement.
