Members of the Sri Periya Mariamman Kovil Land Retrieval Movement have urged the Erode district administration to reclaim 12.66 acres of encroached land, as ordered by the Madras High Court, and to proceed with developing an 80-feet road.
At a meeting held on Sunday (December 7, 2025), presided over by its president E.R.M. Chandrasekar, the movement passed resolutions thanking lawyers, traders, associations, and the public for supporting its efforts. One resolution noted that in December 2022, the Madras High Court ruled that the land along Meenatchi Sundaranar Road, belongs to the State government and that there was no bar on forming an 80-feet road. The Church of South India Trust Association, which had encroached on the land, appealed the order, but the case was recently dismissed.
The movement urged the district administration to take possession of the land and lay the proposed road linking Meenatchi Sundaranar Road with Railway Station Road, stressing that the new stretch will ease the city’s traffic congestion and should be executed without delay. They also sought allocation of space from the retrieved land for constructing a Periya Mariamman temple.
