After Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) takes over, the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), may have air-conditioned three-coach trains that will operate at a frequency of five minutes.
The government plans to procure 90 coaches initially for the operations. 25 three-coach trains will be operated at a five-minute frequency, and five trains will be on standby for maintenance, sources said.
“Initially, the train frequency will be ten minutes. Gradually, it will be improved to five minutes keeping in mind the convenience of commuters,” a source said.
The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has been holding discussions with the authorities of Southern Railway every week. “The draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is now with the Railways. Whatever changes need to be done will be done in the next few weeks. The government is keen to sign the MoU with Railways before the end of December,” an official said. It is not clear yet on what type of signalling and traction systems will be adopted for MRTS in future.
Post a 15-year waiting period, Railways gave its nod for the takeover of the MRTS system by CMRL just two months ago. This project is highly anticipated by commuters who believe it could result in a clean and convenient MRTS stations and trains.
A.B. Prasanna Kumar who frequently travels between Beach station and Chepauk said, it would be helpful for commuters if the frequency of the trains are increased. “I usually take the train at 9.25 a.m., but there have been instances wherein I was delayed by five minutes and ended up waiting for another 20 minutes for the next train. So, having trains every five minutes will be a relief,” he added.
While he looks forward to the takeover of MRTS by CMRL, he said, some of the aspects like affordable fares and monthly passes should be retained.
