Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Tuesday inaugurated through video-conference the newly-constructed road over bridge (ROB) at Satchiyapuram.

With this, a long-felt demand of Sivakasi city to overcome the traffic congestion caused by two railway gates — Satchiyapuram and Tiruthangal – has been half fulfilled.

Later, Revenue Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Finance Minister, Thangam Thennarasu, formally threw the bridge, constructed at a cost of Rs. 61.74 crore, open for public usage.

Virudhunagar Collector, N.O. Sukhaputra, MP, B. Manickam Tagore, Sivakasi MLA, G. Ashokan, Mayor, I. Sangeetha, Sivakasi Sub-Collector, Mohammed Irfan, were among those who were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ramachandran said that Mr. Stalin was following the footsteps of his father and former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, who was instrumental in construction of many bridges during his tenure.

The Chief Minister was implementing various schemes that would benefit the people, he added.

Addressing the function, Mr. Thennarasu said that the construction the bridge work has been completed three months ahead giving relief to the people of Sivakasi and Tiruthangal from the traffic congestion caused due to closure of railway gate at Satchiyapuram.

He attributed the expedited completion of the 850-metre-long bridge work to the coordinated work from officials of departments like Highways, Tangedco, people’s representatives and the contractor. “This bridge work is a model for the inter-departmental coordination for the State in executing such works,” Mr. Thennarasu said.

He also said that the work for the other ROB at Tiruthangal would soon start with the State Government sanctioning Rs. 74 crore, including Rs. 45 crore for the bridge work alone.

The tendering process of the work would start soon, he added. Already, most of the land acquisition work has been completed.

Similarly, efforts were being made to four-lane Sivakasi-Virudhunagar stretch of the road, he added. Highways Superintending Engineer, R.K. Ramesh (Projects, Madurai), Murugesan (Construction and Maintenance, Tirunelveli), were among those who were present.
