The son of a DMK MLA, who was caught shouting slogans against the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court’s Thirupparankundram verdict during Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s visit to Madurai on Sunday, has clarified that his protest was aimed at the judge and the verdict, and not the Chief Minister as some reports in the media suggested.
Among the DMK cadres waiting at the Madurai airport to see off Mr. Stalin on Sunday, a loud, contemptuous voice was reportedly heard. By the time others noticed the individual, the police deployed there shut his mouth to muffle his voice and eventually removed him from the spot.
Since the slogans were indistinct, news spread that Mr. Akshay, son of Vilathikulam DMK MLA G.V. Markandeyan, was raising slogans against Mr. Stalin and the DMK.
Amidst social media criticism, Mr. Akshay clarified to journalists in Thoothukudi that he had intended to criticise the judgment that permitted petitioners to light a lamp at the deepathoon atop Thirupparankundram hills, which he felt “threatened the social fabric of the country.”
“I wanted to make everyone present aware of the personal bias the Judge held in his heart and I wanted to mention only that,” he said.
He said he was a law student from New Delhi and was truly inspired by Mr. Stalin’s determination against the judgment when he said: “We shall do it and face the consequences of our action.”
“I was dismayed and saddened after reading the judgment in the newspaper and the pity I had for the state of justice in the country provoked me to shout against the judgment,” he said.
Mr. Akshay said he submitted a representation to MP Kanimozhi to raise the issue in Parliament and propose action against the judge.
Police sources said they had not initiated any action against him.
