The ongoing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)-4 survey, which began in September, has shown encouraging results compared to the previous NCD-3 survey conducted last year. So far, screening has been completed for about 39 lakh people across Andhra Pradesh, Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education Satya Kumar Yadav said on Tuesday.

Out of those screened, health workers have identified 22,861 women showing symptoms of cervical cancer, 9,963 with symptoms of breast cancer, and 26,639 with symptoms of oral cancer. These individuals will undergo another round of screening at their nearest Primary Health Centres (PHCs). Those requiring further tests will be referred to the teaching hospitals in their respective districts, where oncologists will examine suspected cases and initiate treatment. For this purpose, a special outpatient room numbered ‘222’ has been set up in the teaching hospitals, the Minister said in a press release issued on November 11.

He said that during the cancer survey conducted as part of the NCD 3.0 programme last year, the questionnaire contained about 210 questions related to identifying cancer patients. This time, the number of questions has been streamlined to 28 to make the process quicker and more focused. Training programmes have also been held for Community Health Officers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) under the guidance of oncologists, he added.

To raise awareness about the importance of screening, the department has involved resource persons from the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and Village Organisation Assistants. The Minister said that women have shown some hesitation in coming forward for cervical cancer screening. To overcome this challenge, the department has prepared pamphlets highlighting the importance of the test, which are being distributed during the ongoing NCD-4 survey.

Mr. Yadav said the department is implementing the suggestions and recommendations of noted cancer specialist Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu in finalising the screening and treatment process.
