In addition to a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stationed in Tirunelveli district, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deputed to that district, the Tamil Nadu government said on Monday. Another NDRF team will be deployed in Villupuram district from November 26, it said.
The State government had earlier deployed two SDRF teams to Thoothukudi district and one in Tirunelveli district. The Commissioner of Revenue Administration and State Relief Commissioner virtually reviewed monsoon preparedness with Collectors of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, and Ramanathapuram districts.
In view of the weather advisory, fishermen have been urged not to head to sea between November 24 and 28, and those fishing in the high seas have been asked to return to safety. The State government has asked District Collectors to ensure that precautionary measures have been taken.
On Monday, Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan reviewed the storage in waterbodies across the State. He also reviewed the precautionary measures being taken by the engineers.
As southern districts, including Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, and Thoothukudi districts, received heavy rain, the Minister instructed engineers in Madurai zone to ensure all precautionary measures are taken. He also reviewed ongoing works in the Cauvery delta districts in Tiruchi Zone.
Mr. Duraimurugan instructed officials to constitute teams exclusively for Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari, and Cauvery delta region to undertake precautionary measures on a war-footing. He instructed officials to ensure that the storage in waterbodies was about 10%-20% less than their capacity.
