As part of the ongoing expansion, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will get a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower.
The new ATC tower will replace the existing one which has been in operation since the airport was commissioned in May 2008.
In this regard, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has issued a tender.
“The current terminal is nearly 18 years old and needs to be upgraded, many equipment and systems have to be updated to meet today’s requirements. Also the number of Air Traffic Movements has gone up significantly over the years and to meet all these demands, we, along with our stakeholders, decided that a new ATC should be commissioned,” an BIAL official told The Hindu.
The official said that it was yet to be decided whether the new ATC would come up in a new location or at the present one.
“If it is decided that it will be set up at the present location, then the ATC will be demolished and a new one will be constructed. If that is the case then a temporary ATC would be constructed to manage the air traffic. However, all this is still in the preliminary stage and that is why we have issued an RFI,” the official added.
The ATC is managed by the Airports Authority of India. The KIA is the third largest airport in India and the busiest airport in south India. In the first nine months in 2025, the airport handled 32.4 million passengers. Several expansion projects have been planned for the airport which include the construction of the second phase of Terminal 2 and a third terminal.
