New police subdivision at Velankanni created in Nagapattinam district

A new police sub-division at Velankanni has been created in coastal Nagapattinam district. With this, Nagapattinam police district now has three sub-division, the other two being Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam sub-divisions each with 15 law and order stations and two All Women Police Stations besides a couple of Prohibition and Enforcement Wings.

Police sources said the new sub-division at Velankanni will be headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police.  A few days ago, the State police headquarters had issued an order posting a Deputy Superintendent of Police to the newly created Velankanni sub-division. 

Certain police stations under the Nagapattinam sub-division will be transferred to Velankanni sub-division. The police stations at Velankanni, Keelaiyur, Keevalur, Valivalam and Thirukuvalai will be brought under Velankanni sub-division, said police sources. 

Velankanni is a major pilgrim centre in Nagapattinam district where the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health is situated, attracting devotees from all over the country every day. Lakhs of devotees converge at the Velankanni Basilica during the annual festival celebrated in August – September.
