New ‘Self-learning’ programme to foster independent study habits among students launched in Thoothukudi

Thoothukudi school education department launched a ‘Self-learning’ initiative, aimed at promoting independent learning for primary grade students on Saturday. The programme is being implemented on a pilot basis in the district covering five government and aided schools from each educational block in the district.

The programme initiated as a voluntary and zero-cost educational effort, marks the major step towards independent learning among school children in the district. In the first phase of the programme, the initiative will be implemented in 65 government and government-aided schools from class I to V, and will be further extended to all schools in the district.

Speaking to The Hindu, Thoothukudi district Chief Educational Officer (CEO) Sangeetha Chinna Rani said, “The parents of the students from the selected schools will be added to the whatsapp group, administered by by each block educational officer, where they will posting information about their children learning independently through a video or audio clips.”

She added the daily updates are expected to motivate other students to adopt daily learning practices, helping them to eventually develop learning as a daily habit rather than something done under compulsion.

Inaugurating the initiative virtually, S. Kannappan, director of school education said, “Every child possesses a unique pace and style of learning. It is essential to create an environment that supports individual learning rhythms. Although children may hesitate to study independently at home, a consistent encouragement from teachers and parents will nurture strong learning habits.”

He noted that the initiative will help shape a generation capable of self learning.

S. Sivakumar, former principal of district institute of education and training explained practical methods through which children can learn effectively using the self-learning approach.

Following the training, the school education department announced that the activities will be monitored regularly through whatsapp groups to ensure consistent follow-up and support.
