The newly-constructed satellite bus terminal at Solar, built at a cost of ₹74.90 crore, became operational on Thursday (November 4, 2025), with buses to southern districts commencing services from 11 a.m.
Spread across 19.9 acres, the facility has a built-up area of 12,247 sq. m., including 63 bus bays, 134 commercial units, parking space for 883 two-wheelers, and an autorickshaw stand for 100 vehicles. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the terminal on November 26.
On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) began operating buses to Karur, Madurai, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Vellakovil, and other southern destinations from the new terminal. However, private bus operators declined to use the facility and continued to run services from the existing Central bus terminal in the city. For the convenience of passengers, town buses were operated between the new terminal and the Central bus terminal.
With the terminal becoming operational, it is expected to ease traffic congestion on city roads and provide relief to road users. The Corporation is also stepping up efforts to auction the shops and other facilities on the premises, which have so far drawn a poor response.
