A 42-year-old Nipah survivor, a native of Valancheri, was discharged from Manjeri Government Medical College Hospital after four-and-a-half months’ treatment, an official release issued by the office of the Health Minister said.
The medical board which had been monitoring her treatment has recommended neuro rehabilitation for her, which it felt would be imperative to help her return to normal life. She was thus sent to Kozhikode Government Medical College, where the Physiotherapy department will be in charge of her rehabilitation care
It was on July 4 that she was shifted from EMS Hospital to Manjeri MCH. At the time, the patient was fully unconscious and was suffering from seizures and low blood pressure. She was moved to an isolation room with alpha mattress and all modern amenities
Following intensive medical management and excellent nursing care, she recovered consciousness after two months, following which she began moving her limbs and started recognising people around her
Since the last two weeks she has been attempting to talk and eat normal food and the medical board felt that neuro rehabilitation at this point was necessary to stimulate the nervous system.
Nipah encephalitis results in long-term complications for survivors and recovery is slow because the virus causes direct impact on brain cells.
