Former students of a private nursing college in Manamadurai submitted a petition with the District Collector K. Porkodi here on Monday demanding the district administration’s intervention in getting their degree certificates from the college.
Abirami, a former student of the 2018-2022 batch, said the college was permanently closed in 2024 and due to that, their access to the college administration was totally cut off.
As her batch initially had 20 students, over the period of four years, only five remained after 15 of them quit their course in the college, she noted.
“In addition to the five students, their next two batch students were also yet to receive their degree certificates and transcripts,” she added.
Apart from the ₹4 lakh college fee they paid in the four years, they were also asked to pay ₹10,000 for receiving all the certificates towards the end of the course, she noted.
Monisha, another petitioner and a student of 2019-2023 batch, said, “Though we paid ₹10,000 after our course and received our semester marksheets, we were again asked to pay ₹10,000 for degree certificate and transcript.”
The students kept on paying the amount demanded by the college and at one point, as they stopped receiving any reply from the college administration, they contacted the authorities of The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University to lodge a complaint regarding the delay in getting their degrees.
“The university said that the degree certificates were already issued to the chairperson of the college and that we could get the certificates from the college administration,” she added.
After the students complained to the local police station regarding the delay, Ms. Monisha said the college administration called them up to ask students to pay ₹1,000 for courier charges.
“We even paid that but even after one year of the payment we are yet to receive the certificates,” she lamented.
Due to the delay, none of the students could apply for any government jobs, private hospitals, or for any higher education, she alleged.
