On the occasion of World Fisheries Day, fishermen in Rameswaram offered floral tributes to the sea.

The Fisheries Department celebrating Fishermen Day at the Rameswaram fishing harbour, paid floral tributes to the sea and distributed cakes and sweets to the fisherfolk community.

Fishermen Association leader Jesuraja, spoke about the importance of fishermen in the economic development of country and also in the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Concerned about the frequent fishermen arrest in the sea, he said, if a permanent solution to the issue was arrived at, fisherfolk community would be the happiest.

Similarly, at Sangumal beach in Rameswaram, the Tamil Nadu Fishermen’s Federation celebrated Fishermen Day by distributing sweets to the traditional catamaran fishermen fishing in the deep sea.

During the celebration, pigeons and white balloons were released along with distribution of dhotis to the fishermen.

They urged that the Union and State governments permit the Tamil Nadu fishermen to practice their traditional fishing in the seas through a joint agreement between the Indian and Sri Lankan governments.

They also demanded that fishermen be included in the Scheduled Tribes list.

Requesting the State government to provide pension to fishermen above 60 years of age, they also stressed on the need to lift the ban on fishing sea cucumber.
