Dr. Rohit R. Ranade, gynaecological oncologist and robotic surgeon, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, highlighted the growing need for awareness on Ovarian Germ Cell Tumours (OGCTs) – a rare but highly curable group of ovarian cancers affecting teenage girls and young women.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Dr. Ranade said the campaign “Hope & Healing: Understanding Germ Cell Tumours of the Ovary” aims to educate families across Kalaburagi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Yadgir, and Raichur districts on early detection and treatment possibilities.

Dr. Ranade said timely diagnosis, advanced surgical expertise and multidisciplinary care have helped several patients from North Karnataka region recover fully while retaining fertility. “Awareness is the first step to save lives. Many young women do not realise that these tumours are often completely curable and fertility can be preserved when treatment is initiated early,” he expressed.

He explained that OGCTs constitute only 2–3% of ovarian cancers but occur predominantly in younger age groups. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, swelling or a rapidly growing mass are frequently ignored, leading to delayed diagnosis. According to Dr. Ranade, Narayana Health City’s approach, early detection, fertility-sparing surgery and modern chemotherapy has yielded excellent outcomes.

Sharing two cases to highlight treatment success, Dr Ranade said in the first case a 21-year-old woman diagnosed with a large mixed germ cell tumour underwent fertility -preserving surgery followed by chemotherapy and later conceived naturally. In the second case, a 28-year-old woman with a rare malignant transformation inside a dermoid cyst was successfully treated through robotic surgery and is now disease-free.

Dr. Ranade added that Narayana Health has expanded outreach OPDs in Kalaburagi and Raichur to improve access to specialised evaluation and follow-up care for women with ovarian-related symptoms.
