The Government Railway Police (GRP) have solved the case involving the murder of a 40-year-old man at the Park railway station and arrested one of the suspects, while a search is on for another.

GRP sources said that around 12.30 a.m. on November 2, the police received information that the body of an unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, was found on the railway tracks between the Fort and Park stations. Based on a report from the Station Manager of the Chennai Beach Station, the GRP, Egmore, registered a case and began investigating.

The victim’s identity was determined to be Asmath Basha of Pulianthope, who worked as an electrician. The body bore no signs of being hit by a train; however, strangulation marks were found on the neck along with bleeding on the nose and mouth. As the death appeared suspicious, Inspector-General of Police A.G. Babu formed two special teams under the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Egmore, and intensified the investigation. The case was altered from “death under suspicious circumstances” to “murder.”

The special team scrutinised CCTV camera footage and, after following various leads, identified the suspects involved in the crime. By tracking an electronic trail left at the scene, the police traced and arrested one of the suspects, Suresh, on Cemetery Road. During questioning, he confessed to the crime and revealed the involvement of his accomplice.

A senior police officer said the preliminary investigation revealed that Suresh and his accomplice Srinivasan, 52, were consuming alcohol with Asmath Basha. A quarrel broke out between them, and Asmath Basha allegedly attacked the other two with a tool. In retaliation, they strangled him to death using a towel. They then took his mobile phone and fled the scene. The police are on the lookout for Srinivasan, who is on the run.
