A man has been arrested in connection with a case where four people were cheated of a total of ₹6 lakh after being promised jobs abroad.
According to the police, Gurumurthy, 30, of Dindigul district, who was seeking employment overseas, came across a WhatsApp advertisement offering job opportunities in Azerbaijan. When he contacted the phone number mentioned in the advertisement, a person named Abishek claimed that he could arrange the job for a service charge of ₹1.5 lakh.
Abishek reportedly obtained Gurumurthy’s documents online and sent him an e-visa and employment order. On August 9, 2023, at the Chennai airport, another man named Sudalaikumar handed over the fake e-visa and appointment order to Gurumurthy and collected the cash.
However, when Gurumurthy flew to Delhi to travel to Azerbaijan, airport officials informed him that the visa and employment documents were fake and denied him permission to board. Later, it was discovered that three others had also fallen victim to the same scam, each paying ₹1.5 lakh to Abishek.
Following Gurumurthy’s complaint at the Airport police station in Chennai, the police registered a case and began investigating. During the probe, a special team arrested Kumar alias Sudalaikumar, 38, of Ettayapuram in Thoothukudi district on Monday. The police are on the lookout for the main suspect, who is on the run.
