Expressing concern over the poor registration rate of waqf properties in Dakshina Kannada on the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Central Portal, State Waqf Board Standing Committee Chairman Anwar Pasha on Wednesday (November 5) asked the fraternity to get actively involved in the registration process and complete it by December 5.

Speaking at a workshop on the registration of waqf properties in Mangaluru, Mr. Pasha said that following the recent amendment to the Waqf Act, the Union government has made it mandatory for all waqf properties to be registered on the UMEED portal. The government has fixed December 5 as the deadline for registrations. “If you fail to register your properties, then there will be problems,” he said.

District Waqf Officer Aboobacker Moontagoli said that of 1,782 properties managed by 840 institutions, only 279 properties related to 83 institutions have been registered on the portal so far.

State Waqf Board Legal Cell President Riyaz Ahmed, a Karnataka High Court advocate, said that if a person is a Mutavalli (caretaker) in multiple institutions, then the individual’s name and mobile number can be used only for registering properties of one institution. For other institutions, the registration of properties can be done by providing contact details of other members in an institution’s administrative body.

If institutions do not have documents that determine if a property is a waqf property, the management committee can approach the local Waqf Board, which will provide the necessary documents. With regard to any problem that institutions face while registering, they can approach the Waqf Board at the district and State levels for resolution and completion of the process, Mr. Ahmed said.

Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader said that in this digital age, it is important that all waqf properties are registered on the UMEED portal. Institutions should enlist technically sound persons in their ‘Jamaat’ to ensure the completion of registrations. In the interest of safeguarding waqf properties, it is necessary for the Jamaat to take active interest in the registration of all waqf properties in the area. He further asked the district and State Waqf Boards to set up a call centre to address concerns from institutions.

M.A. Gafoor, the Chairman of Karnataka State Coastal Development Board, also spoke at the workshop.
