The government will take stringent measures to ensure transparency in the general education sector and retain people’s trust, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said.

Reacting to the surprise inspections by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau under the name ‘Operation Blackboard’ in offices under the General Education department, the Minister said on Thursday that the government took a serious view of the issues detected.

Strict action would be taken against officials whose names crop up in VACB reports or against whom clear evidence has been found. Support would be extended for further inspections, the Minister said.

He promised legal action against all officials found guilty and retired officials who acted as middlemen.

The Minister said an internal investigation committee would be formed to look into all files and procedures that paved the way for corruption.

The functioning of all offices that see regular interactions with the public would completely shift to online or automated system. Procedures would be amended to fix a time limit to ensure that applications were not delayed, he said in a statement.

He underlined that there was no place for corruption in the General Education department. No official was above the law. Further action would be taken on the basis of the final report after further inspections, Mr. Sivankutty said.
