The Congress party on Friday (November 28, 2025) criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for daring the Opposition parties to stop him from returning to power and implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly are due by May 2026.
Congress leader Pawan Khera said the Chief Minister’s days were numbered because of misrule and large-scale corruption. “First of all, he will not return to power. He knows he will go to jail after the upcoming election,” he said.
The Congress spokesperson said the UCC was undesirable for a diverse country like India. “This country is a collection of several belief systems, customs, traditions, and languages. You cannot try to impose one language, one system, one belief, and one faith on everyone,” he said.
Mr. Khera accused the Chief Minister of damaging Assam’s identity and heading “the most corrupt government in the history of independent India”. He said people discuss corruption whenever the Chief Minister’s name crops up.
“Under the BJP, Assam has changed the meaning of ABCD. Today, A is for Adani, B for betel nut, C for cattle, and D for drugs,” he said, referring to allegations that the government was evicting people to provide space for the Adani Group’s industrial units and patronising the smuggling of betel nuts, cattle, and drugs.
Mr Khera claimed that the State Government, scared of the upcoming elections, was weakening the voting power of the people of Assam by including outsiders in the electoral rolls. He also challenged the Chief Minister to declare the assets acquired by his family members in the last five to seven years.
State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi slammed the State government for pushing the anti-polygamy Bill, calling it an attack on India’s diverse cultural fabric.
“Nagpur (headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) is dictating the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government to take such steps, including the attempt to impose the UCC,” he said.
