Inspired by the success of the organic farmers market held every first Sunday at CSI Bain School in Kilpauk (until early this year, when it shifted to MCTM School), a new organic farmers market will be inaugurated at CD Nayagam Higher Secondary School in T. Nagar on November 9.

Organic bazaars are a reflection of the ‘Farm to Table’ culture slowly picking up in Chennai. Here one does not just come to shop but one gets to interact with farmers, share knowledge, engage through activities and indulge in mouth watering organic dishes.

Aram Thinai, an organisation working on climate change, environment and livelihood, will be hosting the market at T. Nagar on the second Sunday of every month.

“As part of an initiative to make Chennai’s food more climate-resilient, we work with farmers in Chennai and adjoining areas. An extension of this is offering market access to farmers,” says Karthik G., co-founder of Aram Thinai, and one of the organisers of the Organic Farmers Market at Kilpauk.

Like the other market, this one also will have 20-30 stalls of organic products by farmers, items by women groups and social entrepreneurs. There will be more than 20 varieties of greens, 10 varieties of traditional rice and a range of organic grocery, value-added products and even cooked food and snacks.

“One of the focus areas of the initiative is to build awareness; we are therefore happy just to see people going around and exploring what is on offer, and it does not matter if curiosity does not translate into sales,” says Karthik.

Consumer engagement is a key focus area too.

The Kilpauk market on an average receives around 1,000 visitors.

“Organic agriculture is beneficial to farmers, improves the health of consumers and is good for the planet. That is what we hope to achieve with this market as well,” says Karthik.

The market will be inaugurated by Grace Banu, transgender activist; Ananthoo, founder of Organic Farmers Market and Shanmugam, secretary of the school.

A mandala art workshop for the public will start at 10.30 a.m. onwards

This is also a zero plastic organic market and the organisers request consumers to bring their own bags for purchase and containers for cold-pressed oil and other products.
