Over ₹19,700 crore in loans disbursed for priority schemes in Salem

Salem District Collector R. Brindha Devi said that in the first half of the fiscal year 2025-26, a total of ₹19,712.42 crore has been disbursed as loans for priority schemes in the district.

The Collector, in a release, said that the government is carrying out activities for the economic development of the public through banks. There are 552 banks in the district: 236 public sector bank branches, 199 private bank branches, and 117 government-owned banks, including Tamil Nadu Grama Bank and District Cooperative Bank. In the financial year 2025-26, through these banks, loans worth ₹19,712.42 crore have been disbursed for various priority schemes, including agriculture, education, district industries centre and Magalir Thittam in Salem district.

In particular, between April and September 2025, various loans worth ₹11,699.55 crore have been provided to agricultural projects and women’s self-help group (SHG). So far, loans worth ₹7,055.06 crore have been provided to small and micro enterprises and educational loans worth ₹59.79 crore to students. 

Indian Bank and Salem Central Cooperative Bank have secured the first and second positions in providing the highest number of loans to women SHGs in 2024-2025 (Indian Bank – ₹ 295.69 crore to 2,157 SHGs, Salem Central Cooperative Bank – ₹161.57 crore to 2,131 SHGs). Instructions were given to the banks to take the necessary steps to provide loans to entrepreneurs who are eager to start a business and students who are seeking educational loans, the Collector added.
