Tamil Nadu has conducted 16,248 special medical camps across the State within 15 days of the onset of the Northeast monsoon, benefitting more than 6.78 lakh people, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian.

Addressing reporters after chairing a review meeting on monsoon health preparedness at the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, he said Tamil Nadu was the only State in India with 4,755 laboratories dedicated to detecting dengue. This year alone, 2,52,738 samples have been tested in these labs.

The Minister said health camps were being organised in localities that report more than two fever cases. Around 40,000 field workers are engaged in fever control activities, while another 25,000 workers are involved in mosquito eradication across panchayats and municipalities.

He added that dengue cases had remained under control over the past four and a half years, with only nine deaths recorded out of the 18,725 cases reported this year.

Comparing disease trends with last years’, the Minister said malaria cases had reduced from 284 to 218, chikungunya from 550 to 429, and diarrhoea from 86,026 to 64,519. Similarly, he noted that cases of hepatitis, cholera, typhoid and leptospirosis have shown a decline.

Drugs for snakebites (ASV) and dog bites (ARV) are now available in all 2,336 primary health centres across the State.

The Minister said that Tamil Nadu had adequate stocks of medicine, and strict action had been taken against medical staff who failed to administer timely treatment.

Senior officials, including Principal Secretary P. Senthilkumar, National Health Mission Director Arun Thamburaj, Health Project Director Vineeth, and Director of Public Health Somasundaram, attended the review meeting, along with district health officers and medical college deans, via video conference.
