Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore city houses a curated collection of over 2,000 plant species, including rare and region-specific flora. The 45-acre park, developed on the Central Prison grounds in Gandhipuram at a cost of ₹208.5 crore, is scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
According to the Corporation, among the rare species is the pepper tree, native to North America, Chile, and Brazil. This aromatic tree remains green year-round and produces dense clusters of white and yellow flowers. It also houses Sandalwood and redwood trees.
An uncommon black fig bonsai, known for its air-purifying properties, adds to the park’s botanical diversity.
Architect Roopmathi Anand explained the landscape architecture, thematic zoning, circulation pathways, and integration of medicinal, ornamental, and endemic plant collections. She said the park is essentially a botanical garden, aimed at protecting plant species, reviving rare flora, and educating younger generations. The project also focuses on conservation, recreation, environmental awareness, and wellness, drawing inspiration from London Kew Gardens, Singapore Botanical Garden, and Shanghai Garden.
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said most works have been completed. The convention centre is still under construction, while gardening works are finished. The park features over two kilometres of walkways, 23 themed gardens, and a dedicated app where visitors can scan QR codes for information about every plant. Facilities include ornamental lighting, 111 chairs, co-working spaces, disabled-friendly parks, an all-access gym, an amphitheatre with a capacity of 500, and a rainwater storage system with a capacity of 15 lakh litres for reuse. Future facilities, to be added in a phased manner, include AI-based gaming zones, AR/VR experiences, and a 12D theatre.
