The 10-day Winter Session of the State legislature beginning in Belagavi from Monday is set to witness the tabling of over 30 Bills.

According to sources, the number is likely to increase depending upon the situation. The previous session had seen tabling of 38 Bills, including those that were not part of the original schedule.

As per the present plans, the Bills to be introduced include the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2025, which was recently cleared by the State Cabinet.

The BJP has already taken exception to the provisions of this Bill that has imprisonment and penalty clause, and maintained that it aims to politically target the Opposition leaders.

The other Bills in the pipeline include the Karnataka Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025; Greater Bengaluru (2nd Amendment) Bill, 2025; The Drugs And Cosmetics (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2025; The Karnataka Cine Cultural Activities (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Karnataka Rent (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Meanwhile, the situation is hotting up in Belagavi with a large number of associations set to stage separate protests to press for their demands outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha where the legislature session would be held.

Opposition plans

The BJP, which is keen to put the government on a mat, has announced that it would lay siege to the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha on December 9 over the alleged apathy of the government towards farmers.

Among those who are staging protests are sugarcane growers who are demanding an increase in Fair and Remunerative Price irrespective of sugar recovery percentage, Panchamashali community that is seeking reclassification of their reservation status and anganwadi workers who are seeking regularisation of their services.

Caste groups’ demand

The Kuruba community leaders too are staging a protest seeking that they be included in the Scheduled Tribes’ list.

Nomadic communities too have planned a protest for being denied 1% reservation in the internal quota among Scheduled Castes as recommended by the Nagamohan Das Commission on internal reservation.
