Over 430 seats under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programmes (FYUGPs) of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit remain vacant in the 2025-26 academic year.
These are among the 698 seats that remain vacant in undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programmes of the varsity in 2025-26.
In the academic year 2024-25, a total of 613 seats remained vacant while the corresponding figure in the academic year 2023-24 was 427, according to data received in reply to an application filed under the Right to Information Act. As many as 436 seats remain vacant for the FYUGPs in the current academic year. There has been a hike in the number of vacant seats for the undergraduate programmes in 2025-26 compared to the situation in 2024-25. It went up from 296 in 2024-25 to 436 in 2025-26. The varsity launched the FYUGPs in the academic year 2024-25.
The BA (Honours) programme in Sanskrit Sahitya has the highest number of vacant seats in the 2025-26 academic year (59) followed by BA Hindi (Honours) (54) and Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) (53). The programmes that have vacant seats above 30 included BA Malayalam (Honours) (39), BA Philosophy (Honours) (33), BA Sanskrit Vyakarana (Honours) (39), and BA Sanskrit Vedanta (Honours) (50). Among the MA programmes, there are 54 vacant seats in the postgraduate programme in Hindi followed by MA Philosophy (42). There are 58 vacant seats in the postgraduate diploma programme in Translation and Office Proceedings in Hindi.
Senior varsity officials say that the intake for the FYUGPs is not on the expected lines in the current academic year. They say required measures will be taken to address the issue that include steps to popularise the undergraduate programmes among the aspirants. Such campaigns will be carried out in schools and colleges.
