A total of 457 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol by the Cyberabad traffic police during a weekend special enforcement drive.

As per the data shared by the police, the offenders included 346 two-wheeler riders, 20 three-wheeler drivers, 86 four-wheeler motorists and five heavy vehicle drivers.

Breathalyser tests showed that 399 had Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg and 200 mg per 100 ml, 34 recorded levels between 201 mg and 300 mg per 100 ml, and 24 had readings ranging from 301 mg to 550 mg per 100 ml.

All the offenders will be produced before the court. The traffic police cautioned that driving in an inebriated state is a serious offence, adding that those responsible for fatal accidents while drunk will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Culpable Homicide Not Amounting to Murder), which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and fine.

During the previous week (October 20-25), 336 drunk driving cases were disposed of by the court. Of these, 317 offenders were fined, 19 were sentenced to jail, including six for one day and 13 for two days, and 23 were assigned social service as part of their penalty.

The Cyberabad traffic police said that special enforcement drives would continue to curb drunk driving and enhance road safety.
