District Collector R. Sukumar on Saturday released over a lakh native breed fingerlings in Thamirabarani River that would guarantee the livelihood of a few thousand inland fishermen besides quenching the thirst of millions of people from four southern districts.
In the presence of Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab and Deputy Mayor K. R. Raju, the Collector released in the river catla (Major South Asian Carp), rohu (Labeo rohita) and kendai (carp) fingerlings, all supplied by the Department of Fisheries in the perennial river near Kurukkuthurai Murugan Temple near the District Collectorate.
“We’d set the target of releasing over 2 lakh native breed fingerlings in the Thamirabarani before the northeast monsoon. After stocking 1 lakh fingerlings in the river at Kodaganallur during last week, we’ve released in the river 30,000 catla, 30,000 rohu and 40,000 kendai fingerlings supplied by the Fisheries Department seed production depot at Manimuthar dam on Saturday. This step will further enrich the Thamirabarani river’s healthy ecosystem besides improving the livelihood of inland fishermen,” Dr. Sukumar said.
Joint Director of Fisheries Chandra and Assistant Director Mohan Raj were present.
