AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday (December 4, 2025) criticised the DMK regime for, what he called, the supply of poor-quality yarn to cooperative handloom and powerloom mils.
Flagging the reported complaints of the mills, Mr. Palaniswami, in a statement, said such yarn had been given to the mills for the purpose of producing sarees and dhotis for the government’s scheme of distribution of free dhotis and sarees next year. He also claimed that in an “unprecedented” way, the government had ordered the return of four lakh dhotis to handloom mills and 13 lakh dhotis to powerloom mills on the ground that there was a change in the quality of yarn.
By making the mills responsible, the DMK government was trying to deflect blame for the Handlooms department’s act of supplying “poor-quality” yarn. Such a course of action was making the mills not only to bear financial losses continuously but also to become inoperative gradually, Mr. Palaniswami contended, urging the government to order a re-check of the quality of all the dhotis.
