Construction of the omnibus terminus at Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai Highway is expected to be completed within two months, with the Tiruchi Corporation having completed the major civil work.
The omnibus stand is being established on an area of about four acres adjacent to the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT), at a cost of ₹17.60 crore. Of this, ₹8.80 crore was allocated from the State government’s Capital Grant Fund, and the remaining cost is borne by the Corporation from its General Funds.
The construction began in November 2024 and the civic body expects to complete the work by January 2026. A senior Corporation official said that the work at the terminus had picked up pace, and work was in the final stages. A major portion of the civil work had been completed, and only minor and external finishing work was pending, he said.
The civic body had planned to convene a meeting with the omnibus operators’ association and other stakeholders to discuss the infrastructure requirements and amenities at the terminus.
The bus stand would have two platforms with 82 bus bays, 45 bays for short-distance buses, and 37 for mobile buses. According to sources, in a day, about 80 buses were being operated up and down, and around 800 buses ply via Tiruchi.
Meanwhile, omnibuses had been allocated a temporary long-term parking bay near the IBT to pick up passengers and they were no longer permitted to operate from the central bus stand area. Earlier, omnibuses were parked on roadsides on VOC Road, Major Saravanan Road, Rockins Road, and around the Central Bus Stand, causing traffic snarls, especially during peak hours.
