Tiruppur Corporation’s move to take over the Government Siddha Hospital premises near the Old Bus Stand that has been serving patients for the last 35 years has caused resentment among the public.

The Corporation had purportedly issued a notice for taking over its property for having an administrative office on the premises. The notice has shocked the doctors and staff as well, it is learnt.

The Siddha Hospital that was started in 1989 caters to the medical needs of as many as 400 outpatients on a daily basis, and on Wednesdays, diabetic patients come in large numbers, taking the number of overall outpatients to 700.

The vantage location of the hospital where other forms of traditional medicine including Ayurveda and Homeopathy were also provided was of immense convenience for the people in and around the city.

The civic body, sources said, is planning to utilise the five-acre premises for constructing a new administrative building.

The public are learnt to have made a representation to State Minister M.P. Saminathan to prevail upon the Corporation to desist from acquiring the one-acre portion with the existing buildings and the herbal garden. They are stated to have cited the assurance given by the previous Collector T. Christuraj that the Siddha Hospital will continue to function in the building on a permanent basis.

The public have emphasised that the herbal garden with 60 species should not be relocated at any cost, and that they had no reservations about the Corporation taking back the remaining four acres of land.

The civic body has already demolished the building that had housed the homeopathy block. According to Corporation sources, the plan for the new building had already been devised. Any further action on the public demand could be taken at this juncture only by the district administration, sources added.
