The Tirupati district police invoked provisions of Preventive Detention (PD) Act under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, as part of combating narcotics-related crime.
PD Act was invoked on Karani Sai Kumar (22), Cherukuthi Vamsi (24), Paipuri Venugopal (45), P. Parandamu (58), all hailing from Srikalahasti, Sadu Hari (28) of Padmavathipuram in Tirupati, and Nallu Murali (31) of Tada.
Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu announced that the action against the habitual offenders was necessitated by the rampant crime by repeat offenders and to ensure public safety.
Taking a serious view of the rising narcotic cases under Srikalahasti I Town, II Town, Thottambedu and Tiruchanur police limits, all located in and around pilgrim hubs, the act was slapped on the six offenders. Given that a similar action was taken in the past on seven persons, the number of offenders brought under the PD Act net with State approval rises to 13.
Our department acted tough by giving full powers to all its wings towards achieving the shared goal of ‘drug-free and crime-free Tirupati district,’ said Mr. Subbarayudu.
