The Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) staged a protest against the privatisation of medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh, in front of the collectorate in Ongole on Thursday.

Addressing media persons, PDSU State vice-president L. Rajasekhar said: “Since the coalition government came to power, it has been accelerating privatisation activities in the State. The Centre had allotted 17 new medical colleges to A.P., out of which five were completed and classes were being conducted there during the previous government’s tenure.”

Later, the Council of Ministers decided that the government cannot conduct classes in these colleges and proposed that they be operated through a public-private partnership (PPP),” he said, condemning the government’s action.

As per the promise made by Minister for IT and Education Nara Lokesh during his Yuvagalam Padayatra, it is the government that should run the 17 medical colleges, he said. The PDSU leader demanded that the government revoke G.O.s 107, 108 and 590 and ensure that every eligible student gets to study medicine.

He said students from SC, ST and BC minority communities will suffer due to the privatisation of medical colleges.
