In a significant step towards strengthening inclusive governance, the State government has nominated a person with disability to serve as a member of the Tiruchi Corporation Council.
Acting on a government order directing that persons with disabilities be nominated to all local bodies across Tamil Nadu, P. Bhuvaneshwaran, a resident of Uyyakondan Thirumalai in Ward 25, has been selected as the nominated member for the Tiruchi Corporation. Mr. Bhuvaneshwaran, who has a hearing disability, has completed Class XII.
Mayor M. Anbazhagan formally welcomed him at the Corporation Council meeting on Friday. Deputy Mayor G. Dhivya and Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan were present.
According to officials, the nominations were invited district-wise, after which a committee headed by the District Collector scrutinised the applications and recommended eligible candidates to the respective civic bodies.
As per the government guidelines, nominated members were entitled to participate in council meetings and will receive an honorarium equivalent to that of elected councillors.
