Seeking increased monthly assistance, members of Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) staged demonstration in front of the District Collectorate here on Tuesday.
The protestors said the physically challenged persons with up to 75% disabilities are getting the assistance of ₹1,500 a month, while ₹2,000 is being given to the persons with severe impairments, which are not sufficient in the present scenario. While Puducherry government gives up to ₹4,800 a month depending upon the nature of disability, Andhra Pradesh Government is giving monthly assistance to the physically challenged and the caregivers from ₹6,000 to ₹15,000 for bed-ridden physically challenged beneficiaries through the Department of Differently Abled Welfare.
While Andhra Pradesh, the ninth developed State of India is giving decent amount as assistance, the aid being given in Tamil Nadu, the second most developed State of India, is insignificant. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Government should give assistance similar to the aid being given by Andhra Pradesh government.
Besides ensuring the disbursal of the assistance in the first week of every month, the government should also give the assistance to the beneficiaries, who are waiting after submitting their applications. The differently abed persons should be allowed to work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for four hours like earlier instead of compelling them to work for eight hours, they said.
“Even though we’ve staged protests on various occasions pressing these demands, the Tamil Nadu Government is not even ready consider our appeals and hence we’ve taken-up Statewide agitation today,” the protestors said.
District president of TARATDAC S. Perumal led the agitation.
