Amid continuing tensions between swineherd communities and farmers over the damage caused to farmlands by stray pigs, the Karaikal Municipality has issued a stern notice directing all pig owners in the region to formally register their livestock.

Municipal Commissioner Subash said in a press release that swineherds must furnish their name, address, the number of pigs reared, and the exact location of their rearing facilities, along with valid supporting documents, for registration with the municipality. Unregistered pigs found roaming in public places will be seized and will not be returned. Owners identified during enforcement drives would face legal action.

Farmers in several parts of Karaikal have been complaining for months that stray pigs are entering fields, damaging crops and creating sanitation concerns. The municipality has stepped up action in recent weeks following repeated appeals from farmers associations.
