Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader M.K. Muneer, MLA, has alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is suffering from “selective amnesia” over the previous engagements of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) with the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) and its political arm, the Welfare Party of India (WPI).
Addressing a ‘meet-the-leader’ event organised at the Calicut Press Club here on Monday (December 8), he said that the people of the State, however, clearly remember what had happened in the past. Mr. Vijayan is accusing the United Democratic Front (UDF) of having an alliance with the JIH. However, it was the LDF which joined hands with the JIH when it was not even active in politics. He showed a campaign poster released during the 2015 polls when the LDF sought votes for a WPI candidate. An organisation’s support to the UDF to ensure the State’s progress was being termed as regressive, while the same organisation backing the LDF for the same purpose was being hailed as progressive, Dr Muneer said.
He alleged that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] was focusing on the UDF’s alleged tie-up with the WPI to divert attention from the Sabarimala gold theft case. “The Kerala High Court has rightly termed it as a case of the fence eating the crop. The CPI(M)’s senior leaders, including one who served as an MLA and another who was the president of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), are in jail now. Those in the TDB themselves were reportedly selling the gold,” he alleged.
Dr Muneer claimed that, though similar allegations were raised in connection with the diplomatic baggage gold smuggling case also, the whole episode lost its steam. None of the allegations levelled by Swapna Suresh, an accused in the case, was followed up, he alleged.
