The Rights of Persons with Disabilities and RTI Activists Team, Tamil Nadu, has once again sought the publication of the list of beneficiaries of 25% reservation of seats in elementary school education under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (popularly known as Right to Education Act) on the School Education Department website.

Claiming opacity in the implementation of the scheme in Tamil Nadu, its president Sundara Vimalanathan and coordinator Ilangovan, in a memorandum addressed to the Tamil Nadu government, said the Rajasthan government used to release the beneficiaries list under the scheme on its Education Department website.

In the education year 2020-21, a total of 69,225 students benefited under the scheme, 55,671 in 2021-22, 66,042 in 2022-23, 69,936 in 2023-24 and 71,398 in 2024-25 got themselves admitted in elementary sections at educational institutions identified for implementation of the scheme.

Plea for publication of the beneficiaries list, at least on the Education Department website, from 2022-23 education year was not heeded by both the Central and State governments

Stating that it had received unconfirmed reports that the 25% seat reservation provision had been misused with official collusion by some private school managements, the forum said that placing the beneficiaries’ list on the public domain with full details would help prevent the deserving section of the children from being deprived of their right to elementary education.
