Members of the Sri Periya Mariamman Kovil Land Retrieval Movement have urged the district administration to retrieve 12.66 acres of encroached land, as directed by the Madras High Court, and to develop an 80-feet road.

In a petition submitted to Collector S. Kandasamy here on Friday, they said that in December 2022, the Madras High Court had declared that the land worth hundreds of crores along Meenatchi Sundaranar Road belongs to the State government, and that there was no embargo on proceeding with the formation of an 80-feet road. The Church of South India Trust Association, which had encroached upon the land, had filed an appeal, but the case was dismissed on Thursday.

The members urged the district administration to take possession of the land and form the road connecting Meenatchi Sundaranar Road and Railway Station Road. The petition requested that the administration initiate steps to retrieve the land and develop the road at the earliest. The members, led by president E.R.M. Chandrasekar, submitted the petition to the Collector.
