Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 127th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, remembered Hyderabad revolutionary Komaram Bheem, who, he stated, demonstrated exceptional courage and struggle against the tyranny and injustice of the Nizam in the early decades of the 20th century.
He recalled Komaram Bheem’s indelible contribution to the tribal society and his inspiring story of patriotism, urging the youth to make an effort to learn more about his life and works. Mr. Modi stated that in the early years of the 20th century, there was hardly any hope of freedom in sight, and the British had crossed all limits of exploitation across India. For the patriots of Hyderabad, the era of oppression was even more terrifying, as they had to endure the tyranny of the ruthless Nizam.
The poor, the deprived and the tribal communities faced unimaginable atrocities — their lands were seized and heavy taxes were imposed. If anyone opposed it, their hands were cut off. In such difficult times, a young man of around 20 years stood up against this injustice.
During that period, when speaking against the Nizam was considered a crime, that young man openly challenged an officer named Siddiqui. The Nizam had sent Siddiqui to confiscate the crops of farmers, but in the struggle against oppression, that young man killed Siddiqui. He also managed to evade arrest and reached Assam. The name of that young man was Komaram Bheem, recalled the Prime Minister.
He noted that Komaram Bheem’s birth anniversary was celebrated recently on October 22. Though he lived for only about 40 years, his life left an indelible mark on the hearts of the tribal community and inspired new strength among those resisting the Nizam’s rule. He was also known for his remarkable strategic acumen and emerged as a formidable challenge to the Nizam’s authority. In 1940, he was martyred at the hands of the Nizam’s forces. Youth should learn more about his life and legacy, he urged.
