The Delhi police have denied permission for the ‘Bhim Rally’ at Ramlila Maidan on November 30, citing the possibility of heavy rush and a high alert situation.
“Due to the high alert in the current situation, a large gathering could not be allowed. Hence, permission for booking Ramlila Ground on November 29 and 30 cannot be granted,” an official statement said.
Udit Raj, former Member of Parliament and chairman of the Confederation of Dalit, OBC, Minorities, and Adivasi Organisations (DOMA Confederation), who had sought permission for the rally, on Tuesday alleged that the denial seems “motivated by prejudice against the name of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the word ‘Bhim’.”
“About 20 similar events were previously organised, never denied for crowd size. Ramlila Ground is for mass gatherings,” said Mr. Raj. He claimed the authorities deliberately denied permission because the rally supported the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar’s vision.
Shahid Ali, national general secretary of the DOMA Confederation, alleged that a significant number of people from the Muslim community were expected to participate in the rally, which is likely why it was not permitted. “It is to prevent unity among marginalised communities,” said Mr. Ali.
