Police detain sanitation workers after protest

Sanitation workers were detained by police on Wednesday after they staged a protest at Marina Beach to demand job permanency.

The Uzhaipor Urimai Iyakkam (UUI), which led the protests for workers’ job permanency under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission, said the police detained over 50 conservancy workers, who entered the sea as a sign of protest.

“The protest against privatisation of solid waste management in the GCC’s Royapuram and Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar Zones has been going on for 97 days,” said K. Bharathi, UUI president.
