“Whether Sengottaiyan will strengthen or weaken the party (TVK) can only be determined based on the votes the party receives in 2026 Assembly elections,” said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) MP Durai Vaiko here on Thursday.

Mr. Durai Vaiko was in Kovilpatti to meet the leaders of 12 village panchayats, which were under Kuruvikulam union of Tenkasi district, regarding their merger with Kovilpatti union of Thoothukudi district, resolving the villagers 17-year long issue.

Speaking to the media, he said that the MDMK had continuously represented to the Ministers concerned and the Tamil Nadu government, requesting that the 12 village panchayats under Kuruvikulam union of Tenkasi district be merged with Kovilpatti union. He added, “I will be requesting the Tamil Nadu government to bring the primary education and electricity department under this union as well.”

Speaking on expelled AIADMK leader Sengottaiyan joining the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), he observed that, “Joining TVK was his personal decision and we cannot comment on it.”

“The BJP’s desire is to weaken AIADMK and emerge as the second major political force in Tamil Nadu. This is not new and they have had this desire for many years. It was because of this ambition that the AIADMK was split after the demise of Jayalalithaa,” he added.

He further noted that he cannot decide on seat sharing and alliance strategy for Assembly elections, stating that decisions will be taken after discussions between MDMK general secretary Vaiko and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

“The identity of the movement lies in its flag and symbol. It is the wish of MDMK cadres that we contest under our symbol. This will be discussed amicably during alliance talks,” Mr. Durai Vaiko said.
