A 25-year-old private driver was hacked to death by an unknown gang on Thursday near D. Cross in Doddaballapur on the northwestern outskirts of Bengaluru.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak, a resident of Doddaballapur Town, who worked as a driver for multiple agencies on a daily-wage basis. His body was shifted to a nearby hospital for post-mortem.

The incident unfolded around 10.20 p.m. when Deepak was standing near D. Cross. An unknown gang of four arrived at the spot in a hatchback, prompting Deepak to flee. The gang chased him for about 800 metres till Gauribidanur–Hindupura Road and attacked him with billhook machetes. He suffered multiple grievous injuries and died on the spot. Passers-by who saw the body informed the police.

A police officer told The Hindu that they have gathered CCTV footage from nearby areas and have leads on the assailants.

The police suspect that the murder may have occurred due to an issue at his previous gig, as Deepak did not have any criminal history or involvement in any unlawful activities. The Doddaballapur police registered a case.
