Doctors of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre cleared multiple stones from both kidneys of a 10-month-old baby by performing a minimally invasive procedure.
As part of the procedure, the doctors involved, during a press meet here on Friday, said that the team reduced the child’s elevated creatinine level to 0.4 by placing a tube directly to both kidneys.
“Within 48 hours of placing tubes, the baby’s urine output showed marked improvement. After stabilising the baby, through mini PCNL procedure, a small tube was inserted directly into the kidney to clear stones through a tiny opening. Using this technique, the urology team removed obstructing stones from both kidneys – a two cm stone on one side and three one cm stones forming a three cm bulk on the other,” said D. Paul Vincent, Senior Consultant – Urologist and Andrologist.
He noted that open stone surgeries were routinely avoided even in children less than one year of age. In this year alone, 12 children have been managed successfully without open stone surgery and achieved a complete clearance of stones.
R. Ravichandran, senior consultant and Head of Department, Urology, said that children who develop renal stone disease have a high risk of recurrence, with up to 50% likely to form stones again.
“To identify the underlying cause, stone analysis and a detailed metabolic work-up are essential, allowing treatment to be tailored to the stone composition and metabolic abnormality detected,” he added.
He stressed that the comprehensive approach – ensuring complete stone clearance, analysing the stones, conducting metabolic evaluation and customising treatment – plays a crucial role in preventing recurrent stone formation.
